Two Doors (A New Poem)

Two Doors

I spent much of my life

by the swinging doors

yearning for a glimpse

of what will come after

and what came before.

Saw eternity

in a newborn's face

and supreme fulfillment

in a fresh corpse's gaze;

Which was more lovely
and transcendent

I cannot say.

But somewhere along
the way I learned

the present matters
most—and this

is where I resolved
to stay.

Later, summoned back

to the swinging door,
I realize we are

so much more
than these bodies
that carry us through

time and space

So let's live more
courageously,

playfully,
magnificently

here, in between

the two doors.
